

Carol Jane Wontz, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. She was born on January 6, 1937, in Queens Village, NY, to the late Thomas Francis Reardon and Mary Jane (née Bouley) Reardon.
Carol graduated from Marymount in Tarrytown, New York, in 1954 and went on to earn her master’s degree from Lehman College in 1956. Following her academic achievements, Carol entered the religious order of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary, where she dedicated herself to a life of service and teaching.
While in the order, Carol taught in Spain and France before returning to the United States. She continued her vocation in education at Good Shepherd and New Foundation schools in St. Louis. In 1969, she returned to New York and began teaching at Public School 77 in the Bronx through the New York City Board of Education.
It was during this time, in 1970, that Carol met the love of her life, George V. Wontz, on a blind date. The two were married on March 20, 1971, beginning a lifelong journey of love, devotion, and cherished memories.
A devout Catholic, Carol was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Washingtonville, NY. Her unwavering faith was the foundation of her life, bringing her great strength, peace, and purpose.
In addition to her impactful career in education, Carol shared her creativity and warmth with the community as the proud owner of the Country Corner Gift Shop in Salisbury Mills, NY.
Above all, Carol was devoted to her family. She cherished her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren, Jonathan G. Wontz, Jr. and Isabelle Wontz, were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, George V. Wontz; her son, Jonathan G. Wontz (Karyn); her sisters, Diana Milton and Patricia Cappiello (Michael); and her adored grandchildren, Jonathan G. Wontz, Jr. and Isabelle Wontz. She was predeceased by her brother, Paul Reardon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her honor at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at St. Mary’s Church, 42 Goshen Avenue, Washingtonville, NY. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 2 Fr. Tierney Circle, Washingtonville.
Carol’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her faith, kindness, and deep love for her family will be remembered and cherished forever. May she rest in eternal peace.
