Elizabeth “Betty” Ferry — beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend — slipped away peacefully at home on May 9, 2026, with her family close around her. Born in New York, NY, to the late John and Anna (Hulpa) Daru, Betty carried warmth wherever she went, the kind that made a room feel smaller and more alive the moment she walked in.
She leaves behind her devoted children, her son Michael Ferry and his wife Darci, and her daughter Christine Ferry; her beloved sister, Veronica “Ronnie” Madden, with whom she shared a lifelong closeness; her brother, John Daru; and her three adored grandsons, Mark, Dylan, and Matthew; and many nieces and nephews who brought her endless joy. Betty was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Ferry, in 2015, and by her brother, Richard Daru.
Those who knew Betty knew her kitchen. She was called “Betty Butter” with great affection, and for good reason — her baking had a way of turning ordinary afternoons into occasions. Recipes were her love language, shared generously and always made better by the company gathered around the table. Betty loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends, and over the years, countless celebrations, holidays, and parties at the Ferry home became treasured memories for everyone lucky enough to be there. She had a rare gift for making every guest feel not just welcome, but truly seen.
Betty married Jack in 1968 in Ft. Lee, NJ, and together they built a full and happy life in Washingtonville, where they raised their family and put down deep roots. Her faith was a steady anchor throughout her life, expressed through her years of active participation at St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, where community and devotion went hand in hand.
She will be remembered not for any single thing, but for the sum of so many small, tender moments — the smell of something baking, a door always open, a laugh that arrived before she did. Betty Ferry made her corner of the world genuinely warmer, and that legacy belongs now to everyone she loved.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, May 18, 2026, at St. Mary’s Church, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name should be made to: Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Ct, Newburgh, NY 12550 or www.hospiceoforange.com .
