John Edward “Sonny” Schadt, life-long resident of Washingtonville, NY, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on March 5, 1939, to the late John and Laverne (Henderson) Schadt in Warwick, NY.
Sonny’s life was one of hard work, devotion, and humor. He married Michelle A. Tangredi Schadt on November 28, 1997, and the two spent 27 happy years together. Sonny retired from Chester Cable, where he served as plant manager, but his work didn’t stop there. He was a trusted and valued employee at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, where he contributed in many ways, including assisting with visitations and driving the hearse.
A dedicated member of the Monell Engine Company, Sonny was well-known for his friendly and jovial personality. His humor and “wisecracking” nature were part of what made him so loved by family, friends, and colleagues. He was often found at his usual stool at Hook & Ladder, always with a joke or kind word for those around him.
Sonny is survived by his cherished wife, Michelle Schadt; his daughters Kathy Lundgren (Terry), Karen Dewitt (Ron), and Kimberly Wood (Joe); and his adored grandchildren Sarah Breheny (Rob), David Keller (Blair), Thomas Keller (Melissa), Megan Eastham (Rusty), Rebecca Lundgren (Ryan), Kevin Schadt (Michelle), Kyle Dewitt, Mario Williams, Jessica Nicholas, Kenneth Wood, and Kayla Wood (Mark). He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, his brother Leon Schadt, his sister Clara Thorp, and several nieces and nephews.
Sonny was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Michael Williams, whose memory will always be cherished.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025, from 4 to 8 PM at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20 North Street, Washingtonville, NY. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 11 AM, also at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Washingtonville Cemetery.
Sonny’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him—his laughter, his stories, and his unwavering love for his family will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
