Joseph F. Nugent of Blooming Grove, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, at Kingston Hospital. He was 60.
The son of Francis Nugent and Frances Backer, he was born March 16, 1950 in Teaneck, NJ.
Survivors include five daughters: Jennifer and her husband, Richard Grounds of Earlton, NY, Cheryl and her husband, Timothy Peifer of Lumberton, NJ, Michelle and her husband, Ramon Anderson of Staten Island, Lesley Nugent of Washingtonville, and Lisa Nugent of Fort Hood, TX; two brothers, John and his wife, Barbara Nugent of Southington, CT, and James and his wife, Kathleen Nugent of Hurst, TX; two grandchildren, Julia and Jacob Grounds; two nieces and one nephew.
Joseph attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School for 8 years. He was accepted to Don Bosco High School in Ramsey, New Jersey. He was a member of the high school marching band. During his senior year, he was chosen to be the Drum Major of the band. He had the honor and privilege of marching and leading the band in the St. Patrick's Day and Columbus Day parade in New York City. After graduation, he attended a technical school for computer programming.
After graduation from computer school, Joseph worked full time. In July 1971, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. While on active duty, he was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. After 7 months off active duty, he was placed on inactive duty. He had to report to Fort Dix, NJ one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. Joseph worked his way up to be a drill sergeant.
He attended Bergen County Community College and received his associates degree in 1980. He spent his entire professional career working with computers. During his career, he worked for ABC Television Network, Disney, and IBM.
Joseph was a resident of Blooming Grove for 25 years. He was very active in the community. He joined the Monell Engine Fire Company in 1986. In 2009, he was inducted as a lifetime member of the department. During his 23 years with the department, he served as a fireman, fire truck driver, fire police officer, Commissioner of the department, and Commissioner of the Orange County Fireman's Association.
Joseph loved his family very much. He always was very active in all aspects of his daughter's upbringing. In his final days, he told his oldest daughter how proud he was of all his girls.
A family statement: "Joseph was a loving father and grandfather. He was a strong and loving man. His passing has been difficult for our family. He will be missed dearly. He will live on in our hearts and our memories forever."
