Richard A. Hunter, a lifelong resident of Campbell Hall, New York, and a 1947 graduate of Washingtonville High School, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, kindness, and love for his family and community.
Born in October of 1928 at St. Luke’s hospital in Newburgh, New York, Richard was the son of the late John and Ida (Mann) Hunter. He spent his life in the community he loved and was deeply rooted in the values of family, service, and craftsmanship.
On September 5, 1948, Richard married the love of his life, Dorothy Warner, in Middletown, New York. Together they shared a remarkable marriage filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories.
Richard worked for New York State as a youth aide at Otisville Training School before getting his certification to be a Vocational Woodshop Instructor from New Paltz. He then dedicated the rest of his state service as a Woodshop Teacher at Goshen Secure Center, where he mentored countless young people and shared his exceptional woodworking skills before retiring. A gifted craftsman and true handyman, Richard was known for his willingness to lend a helping hand. Whether building his own family home, constructing a home for his daughter, or assisting friends and neighbors with projects, he generously shared his talents with anyone in need. His mastery of woodworking, strong work ethic, and selfless spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A devoted member of Hope Chapel Mission Church in Salisbury Mills, Richard's faith was an important part of his life and guided the compassion and generosity he showed to others.
Richard will be remembered as a wonderful man—loving, patient, kind, hardworking, and generous. He possessed an excellent sense of humor and a quick wit that brought laughter to family gatherings and brightened the lives of those around him. Above all, he treasured his family and took great pride in the generations that followed him.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy L. Hunter; his daughter, Christina Ragland and her husband, Harry; his grandchildren, Aaron (Melissa), Elton (Rebecca), and Derek (Beth); his great-grandchildren, Cierra, Elton Jr., Brandon, Elias, Freedom, Eliot and Magnolia; and his great-great-grandchildren, Luka, Niko, and Sienna. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Wesley and Robert, his sister Emma Mae, and many others who welcomed him into eternal peace.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20 North Street, Washingtonville, New York.
