Winslow – Gerald “Gerry” “Popps” Simpson, 82, of Winslow, passed from this life to the next on Monday January 30, 2017. He was born on January 16, 1935 in Waterville, one of eight children of Lillian (Letourneau) and George Simpson. He was educated in Waterville schools and graduated from Waterville High School, Class of 1953. He then served in the US Army for three years and readily shared his experiences with those who were interested. Upon returning he entered Thomas College and studied Accounting. He then joined the US Post Office where he worked for 39 years, retiring in 2003.
Gerry was a great Waterville sports fan, even if there was a grandchild on the opposing team, which says a lot because he absolutely loved his grandchildren. He also enjoyed the Red Sox and Bruins but nothing gave him greater pleasure than golf, especially when played with his two sons. He enjoyed bluegrass music and was known to play the piano and harmonica well and give an enthusiastic go of it.
Gerry will be remembered for enjoying pizza while watching The Three Stooges which may have influenced his sense of humor, joking and teasing to his very last days. He enjoyed simple pleasures like his daughter’s spaghetti sauce that was good enough to have as a birthday meal. Or breakfast at ten o’clock with his son at Big G’s; a game of cribbage; and bringing a cup or two of Dunkin Donut Coffee over the past 12 years to friends living at Oak Grove (DNKN stock dropped a point upon news of Gerry’s passing).
Gerry is survived by his three children: Lynne Melanson and her husband Matt of Waterville; Joe Simpson and his wife Tammy of Belgrade; Peter Simpson and his wife Melody of Portland; his four grandchildren whom he cherished: Cody, Tyler, Ashley, and Susan; his brother Donald Simpson and his wife Nancy of Waterville; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Gerry was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Pauline (Baron) in 2013; as well as his brothers and sisters: Eugene, Richard, Shirley, Evelyn, Waneta and Robert.
The Simpson family would like to recognize and express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Oak Grove for the loving care given to Gerry and ourselves during his brief stay.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 9, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Please visit www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with Gerry’s family.
