Hazel was born at her parents’ home in Richmond, Maine on February 16, 1913. She graduated from Richmond High in 1930 where she was an outstanding student and a member of the girl’s basketball team. She then attended the Kent’s Hill School for a year and went on to the Leslie School in Boston where she earned her teaching degree. She returned to teach in Richmond schools, teaching “the little ones” as she always called them. In the summer of 1939, she was married to Hazen Aucoin of Waterville and was adopted by his large and loving family.
After World War II, they settled in Portland where they raised four children. They were married for 44 years when Hazen passed away in August of 1983.
After two years, she moved to the Waterville area to be closer to her son Stephen, his wife Susan and her dear sister-in-law Josephine and her family. She quickly expanded her circle of friends and it was a joy to see the “old ladies” walking the beach at Popham where they would rent a small cottage in the summer for a week or two. All widowed, they were most happy in each other’s company.
Hazel is survived by her son, Dean and his wife Suzanne (Bourque) of Manchester, NJ; her son Stephen of Waterville; her daughter Nancy Granberg and her husband Brent of New Sharon and her daughter Gayle Hickock and her husband Bob of Cape Elizabeth. She was the proud grandparent of Martin and Simone Aucoin, Joshua and Alyssa Nappi, Nicole and Sean Aucoin, Sharon Jessie and Carrie French and Hilary Granberg and great grandchildren Sebastian Granberg and Issiah Jessie.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Hazen, her sister, Marion and brothers Leslie and Leighton; her sisters-in-law (and truly friends) Ivanetta Landry, Marguerite Page and Josephine Lagueux and many, many friends. It will forever be true that she never said a bad word of anyone.
In her place, our thanks and love go to all the staff at Oak Grove Center who cared for her over the past three years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday Oct 1, 2010 at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Silver Street Waterville. Burial will be 9:00 AM Saturday Oct 2, 2010 at Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Avenue Portland. Arrangements are under the care of Veilleux Funeral Home.
