Joseph Augustin Cosgrove Jr.

WATERVILLE - Joseph Augustin Cosgrove Jr., passed away on Aug. 24, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. Joe was born on Feb. 17, 1940 in North Vassalboro, the son of Joseph and Marion (Ayer) Cosgrove.

Growing up, Joe was a three sport athlete for Winslow High School, but his passion was baseball. In 1954, he pitched a win and hit a homerun in the 1954 Regional Championship of the Pony League in Newburgh, N.Y. As a freshman, he played for the varsity squad in both football and baseball, and also played basketball. During the summer following his junior year of high school, Joe was invited to play with the semi-pro Waterville Giants baseball team where he played shortstop from 1957-1962. After his senior year of high school, he held the record for the most points scored in a single season of Maine Class A football. He attended MCI prep and played football there in 1958-1959 and then continued on to Thomas College where he earned his associates degree in accounting.

Joe started his working career at Federal Trust Bank 1961-1967 and then went to Keyes Fibre Company from 1967-1994, where he worked in both customer service and purchasing. In the early years, Joe also moonlighted at the Roosevelt Lounge, as a bartender, to help make ends meet.

For many years, Joe would spend hours in the evenings and weekends, officiating sports and broadcasting hockey games on WTVL radio (22 years). He umpired high school and college baseball games for over 37 years, he officiated football games for 35 years, and worked the clock until 2013. He was proud to have served as president of the Maine State Football Officials Association and as president of the local board. His most gratifying experiences were coaching youth hockey and baseball. Joe was married, for 24 years, to the mother of their children, Sheila Horne Cosgrove. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Gwen Michaud. He is survived by his loving children, daughter, Leslie Cosgrove, and son, Michael Cosgrove and partner, Donna Sukeforth; his grandson, Ryan Michael Cosgrove; his sisters, Betty Lemieux along with her husband, Jerry Lemieux, and Polly Boudreau; his brother-in-law, Ken Michaud; along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Joe was a good friend for many years and will always be remembered so fondly. We will truly miss him.
Leslie and Mike, you were blessed with a father who loved you, was proud of you, and was always so happy to tell us what you were “up to” over the years. In particular, we remember how he was always smiling whenever he talked about you.
We are so sorry for your loss.

Joe was a great man and a very dear friend. He will be sadly missed by myself and so many others. His past few years have been very difficult for him , and he never wanted to be a burden to family and friends, always thinking of others first. A truly great man with love of family. His great smile and story's I will always remember. Rest in piece Jobey with love and respect.

Have known Joe, Les & Mike for over 40 years. From days at East Pond, golfing at WCC, softball games, countless cribbage games, poker, Pats games, had a lot of laughs & fun! His resounding voice could be heard for a ways! Also remember going to his house on New Year's day for eggs benedict & bloody Mary's! We will sorely miss Joe! Deb & Dave Miller
