North Vassalboro—Renee (Markham) Fournier, 86, died peacefully Feb. 27, 2010 at her home. She was born in Sheffield, England a daughter of George and Eliza Markham. Educated in England, Renee met her husband to be Carleton “Ike” Fournier as she was serving in the Timber Corps of the Land Army of England and Ike was a member of the US Army Medical Corps. In 1943 they met at a Woodchoppers Ball and in 1944 they married, in 1945 their first child was born, and in 1946 she and her 1st child finally joined Ike in North Vassalboro, as was the case with most war brides “getting married” was the easy part getting her to the US was the real challenge.
Renee was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in North Vassalboro where she was also the Cantor for many years, a member of the Kennebelle’s, and delivered Meals on Wheels for over 30 years. She worked for St. Bridget’s Credit Union, which then became Vassalboro Federal Credit Union, the American Woolen Mill (which was across the Street), was manager of the Wyandotte Mill Store, and also worked for W.T. Grant.
Renee was predeceased by her parents and her sister and brothers, and her beloved husband Ike in 1989.
Surviving are her 5 children, Wayne and his wife Nancy of Frye Island, Maine and The Villages, Florida, Rick and his wife Lisa of St. Petersburg, Florida, Pat Soucie of Oakland, Cindy Smith and her husband Robert of Oakland, and Bill and his wife Kathy of Athens, Ohio, 11 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday March 3, 2010 at Veilleux’s Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in North Vassalboro. Burial will be in the Spring in The Village Cemetery, North Vassalboro.
