WATERVILLE – Romuald J. Gilbert, 82, of Winslow, died Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 at Maine General Medical Center, Thayer Campus, Waterville. He was born in St. Alfred, Canada, on February 11th, 1929, the son of Louida and Bernadette (Nadeau) Gilbert. He immigrated with his parents to the U.S. when he was 4 months old. He always bragged of his remembrance of coming to the U.S. as a baby. A lifelong resident of Winslow and a member of Corpus Christi Parish, attending St. John the Baptist Church. Romeo attended Winslow schools and worked for Hollingsworth and Whitney for 10 years and then the Scott Paper Company for 32 years before retiring in 1987. Romeo also worked for Winslow Fire Department for 23 years attaining the rank of Captain. He also volunteered for many years at Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Romeo was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Rita (Chamberlain) Gilbert; three brothers, Joseph, Gerard and Norman; a sister, Noella LeClair; a son in law, Tim Larcombe; a nephew, Michael Gilbert; as well as brothers in law and sisters in law.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia (LeClerc) Gilbert; three sons, Roger Gilbert of Jefferson, Stephen Gilbert and his wife Susan of Vassalboro, and David Gilbert and his wife Brenda of Winslow; three daughters, Patrice Lessard of Vassalboro, Kathy Cole and her husband Tom of Oakland and Theresa Giron and her husband John of Eddington; a brother, Maurice Gilbert and wife Ann of Winslow; a brother in law, Wilfred Chamberlain and his wife Ruth of Texas; a sister in law, Gloria Brayall of California; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; four stepchildren, Cathy Turner and her husband Tim of Palermo, Debbie Hebert and her husband Michael of Oakland, Melinda Morissette and her partner Sandy Libby of Corinth and Wilfred Morissette Jr. and his wife Susan of Winslow; eight step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, December 5th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Tuesday, December 6th at St John the Baptist Church, Winslow. Burial will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to either St. John Regional Catholic School, 15 South Garand Street, Winslow or Corpus Christi Parish, 70 Pleasant Street, Waterville.
