Marie C. "Mellie" Spena

Mellie was born in Watkins Glen, NY on December 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Rocco and Mary (Compese) Scaptura. She had worked for many years at the Watkins Glen Elementary School and as a volunteer at the gift shop at Schuyler Hospital. She was a very active member of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church. She sang in the Resurrection Choir, was a member of the Guild, and walked children to Religion Classes. Mellie was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas J. Spena in 1983 and by her siblings, Celicia DeNardo, Rocco “Dick” Scaptura, Frank Scaptura, Joe Scaptura, and Nick Scaptura.

Mellie is survived by her children, Frank Spena, Sr. of Watkins Glen and Mary Rose (Gregory) Laux of Tonawanda, NY; her grandchildren, Frank Spena, Jr., Nicholas Piersons, and Bradley Piersons; her sister, Grace Cherock; her brother, George Scaptura; sister in law, Judy Scaptura; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Friends and family may call from 5pm to 8pm on Thursday, May 31 at the Haughey-Wood Funeral Home, 119 5th St., Watkins Glen. A Mass of Christain Burial will be celebrated at 9 am on Friday, June 1st at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
