Michael DeKoven Bowen was born in East Point, Georgia on May 7, 1949 and passed away on June 20, 2020. He was the son of Margaret Louise Humphrey and Paul Bowen.

He retired as the Director of the Wayne State University Student Center in 2011. Michael lived his life to the fullest and was a strong an honorable man who was loyal and trustworthy. His passions included volunteerism, painting (MFA 1986), dancing, singing, anything Motown, traveling and tennis. Always smiling, you couldn’t help but love him from the first moment you met him. His light shined on the countless number of students whom he quietly mentored during his tenures at WSU and at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Professionally, Michael was honored with numerous awards which included the WSU Homer D. Strong Award for distinguished leadership and service and the Gretchen Laatsch Outstanding Service Award from the Association of College Unions International and a WSU Presidential Bonus Award for painting large scale murals in two buildings at WSU. He was never at a loss for energy when it came time to volunteer for the American Red Cross or at countless WSU events like Commencement, Scholars Day, Motor City Makeover, Homecoming, Grad Expo and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Day. In addition to serving as a WSU Alumni Association Board Member, he was also a weekend art instructor at Sacred Art Church.

Married on November 12, 2012, he is survived by his true love, Christina (Basso) Bowen and siblings Jerene Calhoun, Cora Threet, Sharon Porter, Linda Blakely, Paul Dexter Bowen and Victor Bowen. Michael’s Family of Love is blessed with James, Terrie, Saundra, Jackie, Mamma Basso, nieces, nephews, cousins, Dora and Daniel from Blessed Assisted Living and friends who take comfort in knowing that Michael is in the glory of heaven with those who have predeceased him.

Words cannot express the the sadness I'm feeling with the passing of Mike. He was a true friend and taught me so much about working at Wayne State University. He was always there to help when I needed it most. I have so many fond memories of Mike. I will never forget the softball games, building coordinator meetings, Good Guy parties, etc. that he was a part of. He will surely be missed.

Mike was one of a kind. His love and passion for Chris, WSU and all those he came in contact with was contagious. The world would be a lot kinder and better place with more folks like Mike. My family and I will certainly miss him, but will always cherish the memories from the time we shared.

Chris, I am saddened to hear of Michael’s passing. Statements already posted by ACUI colleagues detail the feeling I had about Michael. My summary statement is the he was simply a “class act”. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Chris, I was aware that Michael had been ill for some time. You are both among the many friends in ACUI that have made this work such a pleasure. I hope knowing prayers of support from so many of us is helpful in this difficult time. Peace be with you, always.

Bowen Family:
I was deeply saddened to learn of Mike's transition. He was a friend and colleague. Mike and I shared some wonderful and memorable times together during our tenure at Wayne State University. We played tennis together, we did more laughing than playing and we just enjoyed each other's company on the court. On several occasions after we retired, we would have lunch together with other retirees to look back over our careers at WSU. Mike was just an all around nice guy. I will miss him greatly. He will always be a part of my life. I want to extend my sincere and profound sympathy and condolences to the family and I will continue to pray for you all.
