Carolyn Faye Layne

Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne was born in Staunton, VA to Pearl Thomas and Charles Brizel Shifflett on March 10, 1940. She was a 1958 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, Fishersville, VA. As a teenager, she worked for White's Department Store in downtown Waynesboro, and was responsible for window decorating for Christmas shoppers, among other duties. In the 1960's through the early 1970's, she worked as a secretary for Basic-Witz, a furniture company in Waynesboro, VA. On March 5, 1965, she married her husband, Henry David Layne. When their twin children were born in 1975, she became a full-time stay-at-home mom and homemaker, with the exception of brief part-time work at The News-Virginian and CVS Pharmacy in the 1990's. In 1993 and 1994, she served as Wilson Memorial High School's Band Booster president.

Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne and her husband Henry David Layne were also long-time members of West Waynesboro Church of Christ.

Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne enjoyed camping; crafting, decorating; cooking; baking; pop music from the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's; Mary Kay cosmetics; spending time with family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren; and maintaining and driving her beloved 1963 Chevrolet Impala convertible.

Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Henry David Layne; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, a brother-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" Layne; and two sisters-in-law, Teresa Layne and Ann Layne.

Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne is survived by her son Timothy "Tim" Layne and wife Brenna Fawley Layne; her daughter Tammy Layne; and grandchildren Robin and Tai Layne; as well as several nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes on Sunday, March 15th, 2026 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Augusta Regional SPCA at PO Box 2014, Staunton, VA 24401. Please indicate on checks that the donations are in memory of Carolyn Faye Shifflett Layne.
