

Charles was born on May 27, 1937, in Augusta County, the son of William Page Lilly and Mary Frances Whitmore Lilly. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife and the mother of his three children, Ellen Gwin Lilly.
Charles graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1955. He spent more than 30 years employed by Dupont’s Waynesboro facility. After retirement, he taught DuPont employees at Valley Vocational Technical Center and served as the liaison between DuPont and VVTC.
Charles was a gifted spiritual leader, who taught classes and led many groups locally as well as at the Brownsville Assembly of God during the revival in Pensacola, FL in the 1990s. He was most recently a member of Cornerstone Church of Augusta.
In addition to his wife, survivors include children, David L. Lilly (Pam) of Churchville, Penny L. Rexrode (Alan) of Stuarts Draft, and Pamela L. Carter (Steve) of Stuarts Draft. Also, H. Robert Mittendorf III of Bellingham WA, Kristen Mittendorf-Johnson of High Falls, NY, Jeffrey Chartier-Mittendorf of East Lansing MI, and their spouses. In addition, he is survived by 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings W. Jerry Lilly of Fishersville, Linda L. Runion of Staunton and their spouses, and Gail L. Strother of Waynesboro, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 4 p.m. at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro, VA, with Pastor Shane Lilly officiating. Burial will be private.
