

Curtis was born in Keysville, Virginia to his mother Reba Powell Clark and father Kenneth Lynn McIver. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with an MBA.
Curtis married Susan on May 3, 1986. Their marriage demonstrated true partnership and excellence in hospitality. They thoroughly enjoyed traveling all over the world. He had visited all 50 states and travelled to all 7 continents including 21 trips to Scotland and 2 pilgrimages to the Holy Land. His favorite place in the world was Pitlochry, Scotland where his adopted Scottish family, the Storeys, live. He played trumpet in the dance band, the Avantes in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Curtis loved hunting with his buddies of the Rockfish Hunt Club. He was also known for his Christmas cookies, carrying on a family tradition of many decades.
He retired from the Virginia Department of Housing and Development where he was State Building Code Administrator (Associate Director). At the time of his death he was the Architectural Review Board Covenants Compliance Officer for Wintergreen Property Owners Association.
Curtis was a lifetime member and member of the Board of Directors for Wintergreen Fire and Rescue. He started as a driver in 2010, subsequently certified as a first responder then at age 70 certified as an EMT. He was also active in Ruritan at the local, state and national level.
Curtis was invested into the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem on April 14, 2012. He served in many positions within Priory of the Holy Isle, as well as within the Grand Priory of the United States of America, most notably as Prior VIII (Emeritus) of Holy Isle. Because of his many accomplishments within the Order, Curtis received the following awards/medals:

· Commendation Medal
· Achievement Medal
· Long and Faithful Service Medal (Bronze)
· Long and Faithful Service Medal (Silver)
· Templar Cross Medal
· Palmer’s Medal
· Pilgrim’s Medal
Curtis was the current Secretary in the Priory of the Holy Isle at the time of his death.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bobbie “Mickey” Motley and wife Susan Hasbrouck McIver. He is survived by his stepson Michael Keeler and wife Anne, grandson Kyle Keeler, grandson Connor Keeler, wife Morgan and great-grandson Parker Keeler, best friend Stan Ripley and faithful companion Emmy.
Curtis exemplified the best attributes of a servant leader in all aspects of his life. His last, greatest lessons were his ability to choose joy in the midst of uncertainty and to never, ever give up.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Reilly and team including Jenna Campo, Alexandra Chitwood and Ashley Davis of the UVa Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center for their outstanding care of Curtis over the past 3 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 18, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 5155 Iron Bridge Road, North Chesterfield, Virginia.
