Gerald was born on January 15, 1933 in Washington County, VA and was a son of the late Bige Jerome and Mary (Stewart) Cox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mildred Virginia (Trail) Cox; his brother, Charles Garnett Cox; sisters, Betty Sue, Lillian, Mary Evelyn; and a grandson, Christopher Cox. He was a veteran of the United States Army, receiving the Purple Heart while serving in the Korean War.
Mr. Cox studied watchmaking at Woodrow Wilson in Fishersville, VA and worked at the Jewel Box as a watchmaker. He then went on to work at General Electric (Genicom) as an electrical engineer for 37 years. He obtained several patents for his work.
He enjoyed camping, fishing at his property on Lake Gaston, playing cards with his many friends, and his daily visits with his “Hardees Group”.
Gerald is survived by his three children, Danny Wayne Cox, Eddie Stewart Cox, Susan Cox Via; three grandchildren, Jessica Paling, Blake Cox, Ryan Cox; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa Via, Ariana Paling, Suri Tillman and Seneca Cox. Mr. Cox is also survived by four brothers, Sam and his wife Joyce, Robert and his wife Katie, Wayne and his wife Pat, B.J. and his wife Debbie; a sister in law, Clara Cox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Retreat for their kindness and special care of Gerald during his brief stay.
A graveside service with Military Rites will be held on Thursday October 28, 2021 at 11 AM at Augusta Memorial Park with Rev. Barrett Owen officiating.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 PM at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
