Jerry was born on June 18, 1938 in Fishersville, VA, and was the eldest son of the late Mary Lee Brumfield Layne and James Robert “Bob” Layne. After graduating from Wilson Memorial High School in 1955, he served in the United States Army for 6 years. Following his discharge, Jerry returned to Waynesboro where he worked as a machinist, mechanic, and electrician for DuPont for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1999. Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, traveling to 46 states as well as most of the Canadian provinces, and visiting the Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway.
On July 28, 1961, he married his wife of 61 years, Ann Hamilton Layne, who survives.
In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by his daughters, Vonda L. Tabor of Bridgewater, VA, and Breeta L. Heizer Hollish and her husband, Doug, of Troutville, VA; grandchildren Drew Tabor, Lauren Tabor, Bryce Heizer and Brooke Heizer; a brother, J.R. “Jimmy” Layne of Fishersville, VA; a sister-in-law, Carolyn S. Layne of Waynesboro, VA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, H. David Layne of Waynesboro, VA, and a sister-in-law, Teresa H. Layne of Fishersville, VA.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2022. Family and friends may visit anytime between 2 pm until 4 pm at the Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home in Waynesboro.
