

Born October 31, 1925 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late James McKinley and Lena May (Spencer) Payne.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Anne (Roberts) Payne.
John spent much of his life dedicated to his family and his work. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Doris. Prior to retirement, he worked as a head landscaper at Waynesboro Nurseries, where he developed a true passion for tending to plants and creating beautiful landscapes. A man of deep faith, John was an active member of Mountain View Full Gospel Church in Afton, where he was known for his strong Christian values and the warmth he shared with his church family. His unwavering faith and compassion for others will be remembered by all who knew him.
Survivors include his daughter, Lucy Mae Baber of Madison, Va; niece, Donna Merriken of Waynesboro; lifelong friend who he thought of as a son, Roger Williams of Afton; and numerous nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025 at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, 66 Tanbark Drive, Afton. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
