

Born October 21, 1947 in Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Minor Austin and Lois (Augusta) Layman.
John was employed by the Department of Veteran Affairs in Staunton where he worked as a veterans claim agent for over 30 faithful years. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served his country honorably during Vietnam. John received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 1969 and later obtained a master’s degree from James Madison University. He was a member of the Waynesboro Jaycees, the Waynesboro Moose Lodge #1309, the Waynesboro Elks Lodge #2270 and the American Legion Post #3. John enjoyed playing racquetball and watching movies. Those who knew John will remember him as an avid philanthropist who had a great sense of humor. He will never realize how big of a role he played in other peoples lives.
Survivors include his three loving sons, Chris Layman, Charles Layman and Chad Layman all of Waynesboro; brother, Richard Lowry of Waynesboro; the mother of his children, Tamela K. Layman of Waynesboro; niece, Kim Wilfred; as well as many special friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., with the Rev. Clayton Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided at the graveside by the American Legion Post #340.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at the funeral home.
