

Leroy Chester “Check” Monroe, 93, of Fishersville passed away Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Royal Care Assisted Living. He was born on January 25, 1923 in Augusta County, a son of the late Charles Leonard and Geneva (Cash) Monroe.
Mr. Monroe was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon. He loved to fish; he loved his flowers and birds. Mr. Monroe enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves and also loved watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren play ball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Elizabeth (Desper) Monroe; brothers, Paul and Dave Monroe; grandson, Chester Scott “Chet” Monroe; daughter-in-law, Theresa Monroe; granddaughter, Cindy Stevens; wife’s parents, Madie (Trainium) and Everett “ Jerry” Desper.
Survivors include his children, Bobby Monroe and wife, Cathy of Lynchburg, Gary Monroe and friend, Jo Ann Hewitt of Waynesboro, and Diane Layman and husband, Doug of Fishersville; brothers, Fishburne Monroe of Fishersville and Larry Monroe of Waynesboro; sister, Audrey and husband, Al of Sanford, FL; grandchildren, Tricia Campensa, Robyn Brandes, Travis Monroe and friend, Jennifer McCauley, Amy Thorne and husband, Matt, Danielle Coffey and husband, Derick; great grandchildren, Meghan Kennon, Kristin Calamos, Jonah and Kayla Brandes, Justin, Katie and Casey Stevens, Travis Hewitt II and Elijah Chester Thorne; as well as numerous extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 12, 2016 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Rev. Lee Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2016 at Augusta Memorial Park.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Royal Care Assisted Living and Palliative and Hospice Care of the Shenandoah for all the care given to “Check” and his family.
