

Lucy was a life-long resident of Nelson County, and was preceded in death by her loving and devoted parents, James Lyle “John” Payne and Doris Anne (Roberts) Payne. She was also preceded in death by her birth parents, Jessie David Baber and Mary Adella (Amerson) Baber; and her longtime companion, Dale Cook.
Lucy’s bright personality, sense of humor and compassion for others will be remembered by all that knew her. She was also a talented musician and songwriter, and her music was a joy to everyone who heard her perform. Prior to her retirement, Lucy worked in the medical records departments at the University of Virginia Hospital and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both in Charlottesville.
Survivors include Lucy’s brother, Kenneth Baber of Paw Paw, West Virginia; her cousin and good friend, Donna Merriken of Waynesboro; and family friend Roger Williams of Afton, who was always there for Lucy during her times of need.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, 66 Tanbark Drive, Afton with Pastor Billy Coffey. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
