
Manola Lillian (Carter) Sumner, 89, of Waynesboro, passed away on Wednesday January 2, 2013 at the Shenandoah Hospice House.
Mrs. Sumner was born on December 28, 1923 in Augusta County and was a daughter of the late Austin and Nettie (Patterson) Carter. She worked for many years at Western State Hospital. She loved couponing and was an avid shopper. Mrs. Sumner greatly enjoyed tending to her garden with her husband. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Emmett Sumner.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sumner is survived by a daughter, Nancy Milburn and husband Lomar of Waynesboro; a son, Robert Sumner and wife Debbie of Stuarts Draft; one brother, Wilbur Carter of Lyndhurst; three sisters, Edith Carter of Oklahoma, Jean Crouch of Ohio, Onie Littek of Lyndhurst; five grandchildren, Tonya Sumner, Tammy Marshall and husband Lt. Col Lane Marshall, U.S. Army, Karen Sandford and husband Donnie, Rhonda Beeker and husband Michael, Christine Sumner and Fiancé Wade Sandridge; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service will be held on Monday January 7, 2013 at 2 PM at Augusta Memorial Park with Pastor D.W. Hines officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday January 5, 2013 from 6 until 8 pm at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
Honorary pallbearers for the service will be her grandchildren.
