
She was born on September 20, 1924 in Nellysford, a daughter of the late Zachariah T. and Mariah Hughes. On August 10, 1963, Phyllis married John M. Rhoades and later made their home on Tuckahoe Road in Waynesboro.
Phyllis was a kind hearted person and was loved by everyone that knew her. She loved children and spent many years teaching at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church. Phyllis served as secretary for the church and spent many years working on the church’s history.
Even though she had no biological children Phyllis was a very loving mother, caring for her stepsons, Lon and Jim Rhoades through high school and their college years at Virginia Tech. She loved and cared for all her nieces and nephews as if they were her own.
Phyllis was one of twelve children, nine of whom preceded her in death.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, John; stepsons, Lon and Jim (Karen); sister, Shenandoah Hamilton; brother, Henry A. Hughes; sister-in-law, Stella Hughes; grandchildren, Phillip and Edward Rhoades and Chuck and Kate; nieces and nephews, Virginia Smith, Dorothy Lang, Harold Phillips, Sam Phillips, Tom Hughes, Ann Youell, Roger Hamilton, Thea Gibson, Joan Martin, Henry Hughes ll, Andria Mullin and Sean Hughes.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Justin Braun officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
There will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
