Richard was born in East Brady, PA, to Fonda M. King and Albert C. King on December 15th, 1934. He graduated from Clarion University in Pennsylvania before completing his master's degree at Western Maryland College. Richard was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as an intelligence officer from 1957 to 1960 before going on to a long career in teaching. He taught biology for the Montgomery County, Maryland, public school system for 31 years and then moved to St. Martins Catholic School in Gaithersburg, MD, to close out his career. In his spare time, Richard was a jack of all trades, enjoying golf, cards, gardening, and woodworking. Richard loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting Scotland.
Richard came from a large, loving family. He was preceded in death by six siblings: Bill, Bush, Dorothy, Dean, Don, and Bob. He had close ties with his numerous nieces and nephews. Richard continued the tradition of loving families when he married his wife of 63 years, Ressie King, who survives him. Together they had daughters Laura King of Decatur, GA, and Lynn Hazlewood of Vienna, VA, and granddaughter Katie King of Atlanta, GA. On his wife’s side of the family, Richard is survived by his niece Sara (Jason) Quick, nephew Aaron (Jessica) Robertson, and sisters-in-law Kathy Elick (Ed Huffstetler) and Dottie Nicely.
Per Richard's wishes, there will be no public services, and he will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro.
