He was born in May 1929 in Fairfield, son of the late Samuel S. Snider and Maggie Runkle Snider.
Sam was a lifelong member of Fishersville United Methodist Church. He served for many years as a volunteer with the Preston Yancey Fire Department. He retired from DuPont’s Waynesboro Plant in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was a 1948 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School’s first graduating class and was a Korean War veteran.
Sam generously gave of his time and talents helping the people he loved and the community with all manner of projects over the years. He was always happy when gardening. Whether on his knees planting seeds; sharing growing tips with grandchildren; or sharing his tomato harvest with friends, Sam relished in harvesting God’s bounty from the earth. Even through devious tactics he and his brothers and sister were always competing for the earliest ripe tomato!
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Mawyer Snider; brothers: James, Stanley, Curtis, Francis, Frank, David, and a sister: Stella Mohler Wimer.
He is survived by his children, Debbie Snider of Bridgewater, and Kim Adair and her husband, Mark, of Hickory, NC; grandchildren, Kendall Fitzgerald and his wife, Lauren, Krista Fitzgerald and her fiancé, Lawton Bair, and Alison Snider; two great grandsons, Grey, and Ford Fitzgerald; sister, Anna Parrish of Staunton; sisters-in-law, Rose Snider, Brenda Mawyer, Dot Oliver, Janet Wiseman; brothers-in-law CT Mawyer (Patty), John Mawyer (Sue); and numerous nieces and nephews.
