Stella Crockett Scott Bosworth

Stella Crockett Scott Bosworth, widow of Elam Withrow “Tom” Bosworth, MD, departed this life on March 9, 2017 at age 94 years. She was born to the late David Ewell Scott and Miriam Belote Scott on October 2, 1922, in the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She grew up on that peninsula in the town of Onancock and was May Queen in her year of graduation at Onancock High School. She graduated from Farmville State Teachers’ College, now Longwood University. There she had met her future husband, Tom Bosworth, who was attending nearby Hampden-Sydney College. Tom joined the war effort in the Pacific as a Naval officer, returning home during the war to be married on December 19, 1944, in Onancock, where Stella was then teaching. They spent time together in San Francisco before Tom’s redeployment.

Mrs. Bosworth raised two boys during her husband’s years in medical school and internship with a daughter arriving after he entered his private practice in Lexington, Virginia. They lived, worked, and raised a family in Lexington, Virginia, Farmville, Virginia, and Onancock, Virginia, making many lasting friends. After Tom’s retirement, they moved to Richmond, Virginia. They had been married for sixty-three years at the time of Tom’s death in January 2008.

Mrs. Bosworth was highly intelligent. She read voraciously and enjoyed acrostic puzzles and played mahjong. She was also a lifelong bridge player. She enjoyed travelling both with her family and her friends visiting many places in Britain and Europe. She especially enjoyed roads less travelled or less cluttered with tourists such as the Canary Islands, and she more than once visited Great Britain’s Channel Islands. She was most fond of the Bailiwick of Guernsey and especially the Island of Sark. She was artistic and her deepest and longest interest was in needlepoint and other needlework. She made needlework Christmas stockings for all of her nine grandchildren and two of her great grandchildren. Her canvases became more and more intricate and truly works of art.

She is survived by her three children, David Christopher Bosworth, MD (Elizabeth “Kirkie”) of Newport News, Virginia, James Elam Bosworth, MD (Bonnie) of Richmond, Virginia, and Richmond artist Eliza B. Askin (Mark); nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church, 1208 New Providence Road, Raphine, Virginia at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2017 with The Reverend Sarah Hill officiating.

There will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
