Virginia McNeil Null

Harrisonburg Virginia McNeil Null, 95, of Harrisonburg, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Mrs. Null was born July 3, 1916, in Salem, the daughter of the late Harvey George Perry and Ella Gillespie McNeil. She was a long time resident of Fishersville before making VMRC her home in 1995. Mrs. Null attended Harrisonburg State Teachers College (JMU) and received a Normal Professional Certificate. She taught primary grades in Augusta County prior to her marriage. Later she returned to the classroom and served as a teaching assistant at Fishersville Elementary and New Hope Elementary until her retirement in 1981. Virginia was a member of Fishersville United Methodist Church. While a resident at VRMC she served as a Cluster Leader, member of the worship committee and auxiliary. Virginia will be remembered by her family and friends as a kind, loving and compassionate person. She was mindful of the needs of others and did many acts of kindness in a quiet manner. Faith was important to Virginia; she was a devout Christian who found comfort and strength in knowing and praising God! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, George H. Null; daughter, Sue N. Hiner; son, George M. Null; sisters, Mary M. Willis and Ruth M. Thornhill; and brother, Samuel P. McNeil. Mrs. Null is survived by her daughter, Mary N. “Frankie” Bowman and husband, Ronald of Blythewood, SC; son-in-law, C. Alan Hiner of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Lyn Hiner of Bridgewater and Chad Hiner and wife Keri of Bridgewater; great-grandchildren, Blaine and Kaylee Hiner of Bridgewater; sister, Edgar M. Hailey of Waynesboro; nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Fishersville United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Jent officiating. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the church prior to the service.
