

William King Orr, M.D., 86, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, in Fishersville, Virginia, his home for the last 56 years. Dr. Orr was born in a log cabin in Smyth County, Virginia to Ross and Lucille Orr on January 21st, 1930. He grew up on the family farm milking cows and working the land. He attended Emory & Henry College. He played with Emory & Henry football team in the Burley and Tangerine Bowls. He also met his favorite cheerleader, Lois Clem Glover, who became his wife on August 8, 1953.He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1956. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force.
Dr. Bill practiced family medicine in Fishersville, Virginia for 38 years, caring for patients from birth to death. While raising his family of four daughters, Dr. Orr volunteered as the Wilson Memorial football team physician. He was inducted into the WMHS Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He gave his time to Fishersville United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Official Board, teaching Sunday School, sitting on the finance committee and Board of Trustees. He volunteered at Augusta Regional Free Clinic and was the student health physician at Woodrow Wilson Rehab Center. He was a member of the Fishersville Ruritan Club. He served as president for several years.
A familiar figure with his pipe and beard, Dr. Orr embodied the spirit of Santa Claus visiting the hospital in his Santa Claus suit every Christmas.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois; his daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and Stephen Brookhouse, Merribeth and Danny Neal, Cherry and David Steffen, Penny and Brentley Bowles. "Bubba's" grandchildren: Hannah and Kenneth Ellerbee, Catherine Neal, A. Ross Neal, Genevieve Bowles, Page Bowles and Rachel Steffen; great-grandchildren Luke and Brynna Ellerbee.
Bill never lost his love of the outdoors, his sense of wonder, nor his deep abiding faith in God. He believed in the value of sharing his gifts and talents with those in need. Most of all he inspired in his family a deep love for one another and the true meaning of Christmas. He will truly live on in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2016 at Fishersville United Methodist Church, 1600 Jefferson Hwy, Fishersville, Virginia 22939 Burial to follow at Augusta Memorial Gardens. The family the will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the service time at church.
