She was born May 14, 1915 in Four States, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Alonzo Thigpen and Florence Christian Hill.
Mrs. Gibbs was a homemaker and a former resident of Pitt Gas. She lived in Waynesburg since 1968.
She was a member of the Signal of Light Full Gospel Church at Edenborn. Mrs. Gibbs was a foster parent for several children and she also helped raise a few of her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, gardening, fishing, and watching golf, tennis and baseball. She also had a love for animals.
Surviving are a son, Ralph Edward Tedder and his wife Shirley of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Evaughn Gibbs of Waynesburg with whom she made her home and Teryle K. Gibbs of Calumet City, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, Carlos Gibbs whom she raised, Valerie Tyler, Carmen Tyler, Debra Parker, Stephanie Hopkins, Johnny Knight,
Sharita Edwards, Della Thompson, Troy Gibbs, Dana Spriggs and Nikki Harris; 24 great-grandchildren including Christopher Tyler whom she helped raise; and 24 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to her parents and husband, Olden A. Gibbs, are two daughters, Betty Tyler and Deborah Spriggs; two sons, John Powell and Robert Powell; and siblings, William Thigpen, Virginia Morris, James Thigpen, and Lena Hill.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 12 at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Clarksville (Pitt Gas) followed by services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. James Cherry officiating and Bishop George W. Cooper delivering the Eulogy. Interment will be at Greene County Memorial Park, Jefferson Road, Waynesburg.
