He was born November 5, 1932 in Waynesburg, a son of the late Wayne and Dorothy Roberts Zimmerman.
On June 16, 1956 he married Ellen M. Bissett Zimmerman, who survives.
Mr. Zimmerman worked as a mechanic in several Waynesburg area garages. He also drove the bookmobile for the Bowlby Public Library and worked as a security guard.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 44th Tank Battalion, attached to the 82nd Airborne.
Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the Claughton Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a life member and past commander of American Legion Post 330 at Waynesburg. He was also a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 123 at Waynesburg. He was a member of member of Greene Co. Voiture 40 & 8 and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 461. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed NASCAR and football. He was an avid Steelers Fan.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 4 sons, Daniel W. Zimmerman of Waynesburg, Charles R. Zimmerman of Florida, Francis W. Zimmerman Jr. and V. Edward Zimmerman both of Waynesburg; 2 daughters, Ellen Owens of Waynesburg and Cheryl Serda of Walker, LA; 10 grandchildren, Richard Owens, Heather St.Claire, Daniel, Shaon, Brooke, Travis, and Devin Zimmerman, Sean Moore, Robert Lee Serda, and David Serda; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Zimmerman of Warren, OH; and one sister, Martha Ann Long of Garards Fort. Also surviving is his beloved companion dog, Nikki.
Deceased are 4 brothers, Charles, Billy, Arleigh, and Frank Zimmerman; and one sister, Elizabeth Wise.
Friends will be received from 1 pm to 8 pm Sunday at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 31, 1012 with Rev. Ron Geisler officiating followed by burial at Claughton Chapel Cemetery with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 330, Disabled American Veterans 123, Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793, and the U. S. Army.
