He was born October 8, 1924 in Pittsburgh, a son of Frederick R. Owens Sr. and Margaret Richards Owens.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with one star.
Mr. Owens was a 1950 graduate of Waynesburg College where he earned a degree in Biology. He began his teaching career as a Biology Professor at Waynesburg College in 1953 and retired in 1992. IN 1990 he was presented the Golden Key Award from Waynesburg College. He was a member of the American Association of University Professors.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg where he was an elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Owens was a past member of the Waynesburg Rotary Club, past president of the Greene County Chapter for Retarded Children, and served on the board of directors for many organizations including Greene Valley Farms.
On November 22, 1950 he married Joan W. Owens who passed away on February 1, 2005.
Surviving are a son, Richard W. Owens Sr. ( Ellen) of Waynesburg; a daughter Patti Owens Gimper (Thomas) of Strongsville, OH; two grandchildren, Richard W. Owens Jr. and Heather St.Clair; and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Peggy Best (Bill) of Alabama.
Deceased are infant twin children.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg where services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 with Pastor Austin Shaw and Pastor Bill Sukolsky officiating followed by interment at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to any hospice organization.
