He was born March 29, 1931 in Morris Township, Greene County, a son of the late Harry M. Rutan Sr. and Hazel Miller Rutan.
On April 1, 1957 he married Wilma C. Temple Rutan, who died April 27, 2005.
Mr. Rutan resided most of his life in Nineveh and Waynesburg. He was a retired farmer and worked as a school bus driver for 32 years.
He was a member of the Christian Church. As a young man he played sand lot baseball. His hobbies were crossword puzzles and bingo.
Surviving are two sons, Richard A. Rutan Jr. of Carmichaels, and Thomas D. Rutan of Waynesburg; three grandchildren, John Richard Rutan, Scott Austin Rutan, and Heather Rutan; eight great-grandchildren, Jonathan Austin Rutan, Brittany May Rutan, Austin Tyler Turner, Misty Rutan, Javin Hunt, Justin Rutan, Jordan Rutan and Jayden Rutan; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a son, Robert L. Rutan; 5 sisters, Isabel Pettit, Irene Morris, Frances, G. Anderson, Margaret S. Toland, and Betty Rutan; and 8 brothers, Hershel M. Rutan Sr., James W. Rutan, Ellsworth Rutan, Harry M. Rutan Jr., John Hollis Elmer Rutan, Thomas D. Rutan, Wilbert Leo Rutan, and Carl A. Rutan.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg where services will be held at 11: 00 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2016 with Rev.
