He was born May 29, 1932 in Greene Township, Greene County, a son of the late John William Herrington and Pearle Nester Herrington.
On October 17, 1970, he married Helen John Herrington, who passed away October 16, 2013.
Shirl was a retired carpenter. He worked as a construction worker with the United Mine Workers of America and as a private contractor.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.
He resided most of his life in Kirby and was a member of the Claughton Chapel United Methodist Church.
Shirl loved gardening and yard work. He enjoyed people and was always willing to help others.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirlene Snyder and Carol Lynn Kolat both of Waynesburg; two step-daughters, Julia Ann Moore of Pittsburgh and Jacqueline Barnes of Waynesburg; 5 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Maple of Waynesburg. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, including William Renner (Alberta) with whom he had made his home.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Delbert Herrington; and two sisters, Freda Bierer and Irene Renner.
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jacob Judy, will be held in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg followed by entombment at Greene County Memorial Park. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, all services will be private.
