Alma Bumgarner Mitchell

“Beloved Momma & Nanny” Waynesville, NC – Alma Bumgarner Mitchell, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home. She was born in Haywood County on October 21, 1935 to the late Mack Bumgarner and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wyatt Bumgarner Lanning and was the step daughter of the late Melvin A. Lanning. Alma was a member of Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist Church. She retired following 25 years at Dayco. She also enjoyed family, cooking, crafts, reading, and basket weaving. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Mitchell in 2007; sister, Ella Mae Stevenson; brothers, Glenn Bumgarner, John Henry Bumgarner, and Harold Lanning; sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Liz” Mitchell Mehaffey. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Terry Mitchell and wife, Shirley of Fairview, NC, Mary Paula Mitchell Mathis and husband, Tommy, Diana Mitchell Garlough and husband, Glen, David Burton Mitchell and wife Thomasine, and Charlotte Mitchell Mathis and estranged husband, Dennis Keith Mathis, all of Waynesville, NC; twelve grandchildren; thirty five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; her special companion, “Bear”; sisters, Ardith Wyatt, Lillie Lanning and husband, Lester, Sarah Lunsford and husband, Jim of Waynesville, NC, Romaine Wilson and Sam Gaddis of Clyde, NC; brothers, Albert Lanning and wife, Jean, Kenneth Lanning and wife, Patsy of Clyde, NC; sister-in-law, Allene Burnette of Asheville, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at Garrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Garrett Funeral Home with the Reverend Phillip Wyatt officiating. Burial will be held at Rocky Branch Cemetery.
