Betty Catherine Lockman Rathbone

Betty Catherine Lockman Rathbone “Beloved Mother, Sister, & Gramma” Betty Rathbone, 78, of Waynesville, passed away, Monday, December 1, 2014 at her daughter’s residence in Winston Salem. She was born on September 21, 1936 to the late Odell and Fannie Sutton Lockman. Betty retired as an insurance agent after almost 50 years in Haywood County, working most of that time at LN Davis Company. She was a lifelong member of Peachtree United Methodist Church. She enjoyed canning and spending time outdoors. She devoted much of her time during the Christmas season volunteering for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. She spent time volunteering at Autumn Care Nursing Home. She also loved spending time loving and playing with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Rathbone; daughter, Tara Dell Rathbone; brother, Odell Lockman, Jr. and five infant siblings. Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Whitaker and her husband Jonathan; sister, Barbara Holland and her husband Charles, grandchildren, Carter Mason Whitaker and Abigail Elizabeth Whitaker; nieces, Kim (Jeff) Cutshaw and Jill (Ronnie) McClure; great nephew, Nathan Cutshaw; very close aunt, Geraldean (Stokey) Caldwell; sister-in-law, Janice Lockman; and a host of other special nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at Garrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday, December 5, 2014 at Peachtree United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Peachtree United Methodist Church, 307 Black Camp Gap Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.
