David Charles Traynham, 80, passed away peacefully on March 24th in Waynesville, NC. Born the tenth child on July 21st, 1945, he always possessed a strong passion for music and sports. He loved NASCAR and was an avid Wake Forest basketball / football fan.
David graduated from High Point Central before attending Gardner-Webb Junior College, East Carolina University, and UNC-Greensboro.
He met his wife, Brenda, at Gardner-Webb. They both shared their love for music and teaching over the course of their lifetimes.
David was a well-known figure in Haywood County for his influence as an educator. Starting in 1978, he led the Tuscola Chamber Singers, Girls Ensemble, Summit, as well as assistant-coaching varsity basketball, and coaching the cross-country team. He also taught music at Waynesville Junior high school.
Summit, a show choir which was created by Mr. Traynham in 1982, performed to sell-out crowds year after year with the “Country Western” show being a highlight for 4 decades.
David was a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, and served on the committee that founded the North Carolina High School Honors Chorus. He spent years as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the state of NC.
He was also a Director of Music for Central United Methodist, Asheboro; Oakview Baptist Church in High Point; Musical Director at Hazelwood First Baptist, and Director of Music at First United Methodist in Waynesville.
David is survived by his wife Brenda of 59 years, son Brian Traynham and daughter-in-law Noelle; son Shannon Traynham and daughter-in-law Jennifer; daughter, Lauren King and son-in-law Shayne; grandchildren Bridgette, Alexandria, Spencer and wife Haley Traynham, Cameron, Madden, Avery, Sadie, Caleb and wife Elizabeth Brown, Tucker Brown, and great grandchildren Blakely Brown, and James Henry Traynham, brothers Jeff and Carey, and sister Evelyn.
David was preceded in death by his parents Jeffrey & Blanche Traynham, and siblings, Henry, Ruth, Eudora, Doris, Alma, and Betty.
“Mr. T” considered his students as part of his extended family. He had a positive influence on many of their lives, some with careers in music or as future music educators. He instilled a sense of respect, responsibility, and pride in his students and devoted his life to inspiring others to succeed. Though a great musical talent in his own right, he never aimed to be the star of the show. Rather, his passion was to inspire others and to help them to succeed, both in music and in life.
David was known and loved by many and will be greatly missed.
