Waynesville, NC - Edith "Mama" Caroline Messer Pressley, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 26, 2018 at The Homestead. She was born in Haywood County on February 19, 1923 to the late Milas and Nancy Sutton Messer.
Edith was a longtime farmer in our community. She worked at Haywood Community College for many years in the Cafeteria. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and raising her beautiful flowers. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny "JR" Pressley; thirteen brothers and sisters; two daughters, Betsy Pressley and Nancy Green; one granddaughter, Carolyn Smathers; one grandson, Billy Joe Sluder; three son-in-laws, Ray Smathers, Bill Green, and Bryan McClure.
Left to cherish her memory are her four daughters, Joyce Frady (Kenneth), Judy Smathers McClure, Rose Hightower, Margaret Sluder (Roger); two sons, Max Pressley and JB Pressley (Helen); her very special companion Yorkie, Jazzy; sixteen grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, March 30, 2018 in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home with the Reverend Johnny Passmore officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery.
At other times the family will be at the home of Margaret Sluder, 4735 Jonathan Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28785
