Eugene “Gene” McKinley Ferguson, a lifelong resident and proud multi-generational native of Haywood County, passed away on October 2nd at the age of 81.
Born and raised in the Allen’s Creek community of Waynesville, Gene was the son of the late William “Bill” Ferguson and Catherine Muse Ferguson. He came from a large, close-knit family and carried a strong sense of community and heritage throughout his life.
A graduate of Waynesville Township High School, Gene was a proud multi-sport letterman who excelled in athletics and maintained a lifelong love of sports. Whether cheering on local high school teams under the Friday night lights or supporting little league games.
Gene’s life was marked by his deep roots in the community, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his dedication to hard work. He was a well-known and respected businessman in Haywood County, where he built a diverse and successful career. Over the years, he operated a moving company, managed rental properties, and became a licensed auctioneer. Perhaps most notably, he owned and operated a large antique trading post that became a local staple and gathering place for collectors and community members alike. His contributions to the real estate market in the area were substantial, and his passion for business was evident in all that he did.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Sherri Ferguson of Waynesville, NC, and his cherished granddaughter, Heather Carver of Waynesville, NC, both who brought him immense pride and joy. Though divorced, Gene maintained a lasting connection with his former wife and the mother of his daughter, Pam Ferguson of Waynesville, NC.
A funeral service to honor Gene’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at Garrett Funeral Home in Waynesville. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, with the service beginning at 2:00 PM.
Gene will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, sharp mind for business, enduring love for his family and community, and his spirited support of local sports. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the many endeavors he built throughout his lifetime.
