Frances M. Smith, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Born on September 23, 1957, in Haywood County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Billy Haywood Cagle and the late Betty Sue Cagle (Packett).
Frances is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Wayne M. Smith, and her two brothers, Richard Eugene Cagle and Edward Lee Cagle. She also mourned the loss of her two great-grandchildren, Stephen Jr. and Kaylynn Sue, who brought her immense joy during their brief time with her.
She leaves behind a large and loving family who will forever cherish her memory. Her father, Billy Haywood Cagle, held a special place in her heart, and her daughters, Mary Jane Woodring and Judy Sue Lawton (Andrew Lawton, spouse), were her pride and joy. Frances is also survived by her brothers, Wayne Cagle and Billy Cagle, Jr., and her eight grandchildren: (her girls) Alyssa & Desiree, along with Eric, Stormy, Billy, Jacob, William, and Dylan. Additionally, she is remembered by her six great-grandchildren, Nova Faith, Kaylee, Kyleigh, Khaleesi, Scarlett and Cain who brought light into her life.
Frances was not only a mother and grandmother but also a nurturing figure to many who were fortunate enough to know her. She embraced those around her, welcoming them into her heart and home. Over the years, she became "momma," "nanny," sister, and friend to many, including Josh and Tonya Johnson, Kyle Lindsey, Janie F, and Debbie Do. Her generosity knew no bounds; she was always ready to lend a helping hand or share whatever she had to ensure that others were cared for.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Frances will remember her for her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and her ability to make everyone feel loved and valued. She had a unique gift for bringing people together and creating a sense of family that extended far beyond blood relations.
Frances M. Smith will never be forgotten by those she loved and cared for, nor by those who loved and cared for her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her warmth and compassion.
We love you, momma/nanny. Your legacy of love will continue to inspire us every day.
