Gertrude, age 97, went to her Heavenly home on September 22, 2018. Gertrude was born at home in Waynesville on May 1, 1921, to Henry and Arvena Smith Jordan. At a young age, she married and they had one son, Kenneth, who became an ordained minister and missionary, pastoring churches throughout North and South Carolina.
Those who knew Gertrude know that her family was the love of her life. She was proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She loved going on family vacations and spending time visiting her family every chance she could. She had many beloved friends and special neighbors. She was a kind, funny, loving lady who cared for others. She took care of her parents in their old age until they passed away and was with her sister Bonnie through her illness. She liked having good clean fun and was the life of the party. Everyone loved her. Gertrude worked very hard all of her life. She worked in a boarding house in Newport News, Virginia before moving back to Waynesville where she worked production for 42 years at Wellco Enterprises. She was a faithful member of Hazelwood Baptist Church where she served as a greeter and worked with the youth, among other things. Her faith was a very important part of her life and she loved Jesus and her church. Gertrude lived independently in her home until the age of 91, at which time she moved to Creekside Villas.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy Plemmons Fugate, three granddaughters: Pamela May (Kevin); Kimberly Knight (Butch); and Cynthia Overgaard (Todd - deceased), all of Greenville, SC, three great grandchildren: Jordan Davis (Jeff), Andrew Overgaard, and Hudson May (Erica), and one great-great-grandson, Kaleb May.
She is predeceased by her parents Henry and Arvena Jordan, sister Bonnie Underwood, son Rev. Kenneth Fugate, nephew Bill Underwood, and several aunts and uncles, all of Waynesville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 26, at Hazelwood Baptist Church with the Reverend Tim Lolley, Pastor Andy Overgaard, and the Reverend Rick Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Kevin May, Hudson May, Rev. Benny Jewell, Rev. Greg Cullen, Rev. Robert Fowler, and Jennings Plemmons. The family will receive friends one our prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Creekside for their love and superior care during her residence there, and the many neighbors and church family who looked in on her for many years.
