

James "Johnny" Willie Rathbone passed on July 20, 2026, at the age of 89. Johnny was born in Haywood County, NC on May 18, 1937, to the late Walter and Mamie Messer Rathbone.
Johnny honorably served his country in the US Army, serving in Germany. He retired from Champion in Waynesville where he was known as "Topcat" after working for over 40 years. During that time Johnny had two inventions that he received patents for which are still used worldwide. He loved helping people, fishing, golfing, gardening and serving his church. Most of all, Johnny loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and one grandson.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Linda Griffith Rathbone; daughters, Kellie Tatham (Dudley) and Christi Howerton (Spencer); two grandchildren, Logan Wood (Oxana) and Nikki O'Driscoll (Brian); four great-grandchildren, Kylie, Levi, Mila and Max; and sisters, Edith Fish and Betty Grant.
