

Lawrence “Larry” Wood Barney died on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at Carolinas Medical Center following a long battle with Parkinson’s. Larry was born in Princeton, New Jersey on July 23, 1951. He was adopted four months later to the loving late Duane R. and Frances Cawthorn Barney who raised him in NJ before later moving to Wheaton, IL. Larry graduated from Southern Illinois University with a minor in Architecture and a degree in Interior Design. He was very passionate and highly talented in these fields and upon graduation, in 1972, moved to Miami, Florida where he began his career as an Architect and Interior Designer and later met his wife Carolyn Kraft. Larry and Carolyn married in April 1980 and were blessed with three children Christopher, Ryan, and Lauren. Larry later went on to start his own Interior Design firm in 1995 in Delray Beach, Florida, working until he retired in 2008. Upon retirement, Larry and Carolyn then moved to the mountains of Haywood County, North Carolina. Larry was a wonderful husband and father, and enjoyed telling a good joke to anyone that would lend an ear. Larry additionally enjoyed surfing at the Jersey Shore, skiing, and later picked up golf which was a sport he enjoyed year round in Florida and during summer in the North Carolina Mountains. Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Carolyn; children Christopher D. Barney and his spouse Kelly, Ryan C. Barney and his spouse Lindsay, and Lauren J Barney; four grandchildren Charles, Reese, Henry and Lincoln; brother, Raymond Barney and his spouse Kathy; and his sister Mary Barney. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 22, at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville, North Carolina.
