Louis (Phil) Mayrand, Jr, 78 years old of Pisgah Forest, NC passed away on March 24, 2024. Phil was born in Greensboro, NC, to Louis Mayrand, Sr, and Evelyn Brown. He graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem in 1964 and attended college at Mars Hill and Gaston Tech majoring in Civil Engineering before joining the US Army in 1968. Phil served two years in the 75th Rangers and was awarded many awards and decorations including the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, 3 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, etc. After leaving the army, his career included decades in residential and commercial real estate as well as building several homes on Topsail Beach and Annika Point, NC.
Phil was passionate about sustainability and as a result, founded the North Carolina Sustainable Building Design Competition. The competition ran for ten years beginning at Appalachian University in Boone expanding to encompass colleges across the state.
In 2008 he met and married his present wife, Diane Carr and called each other “two peas in a pod.” Phil loved cookies, the Carolina Blue Sky, and ice cream. He relished hot coffee in the mornings, especially sitting in the rocking chair by the fireplace.
Phil was quite active in the Veterans Military Museum of the Carolinas in Brevard, NC. He ran a monthly social/support group for veterans called Coffee and Conversation which has served the Brevard area for over two years and continues to be a safe place for veterans to gather. In his spare time, Phil enjoyed hiking the beautiful trails in nearby forests, looking at trucks online, and taking great pleasure in working on various home projects.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Carr, stepdaughters, Meagan and Kira Earley, sister Cecile, her husband Ed Broadhurst, and nephews Chip Taylor and Graham Cavenaugh.
In place of flowers, the family requests online, mailed, or in-person donations be made to The Military History Museum of the Carolinas, a local organization with which Phil felt exceptionally connected. https://theveteransmuseum.org/support/donate-2/
