Mr. Manfred H. Suckert, 88, passed to his rest in Jesus on January 2, 2024 in Hendersonville, NC. He was a man of strong character who loved & served God throughout his life. He was a devoted man who worked hard to provide for his family that he loved & cared for deeply.
Mr. Suckert was born in Treuburg, East Prussia, Germany on July 20, 1935. He immigrated to America in 1954 along with his parents & brothers. Shortly after coming to America, he met the young lady he would later marry at the German Seventh-day-Adventist Church in Manhattan, NY. (His father, Gerhard E. Suckert was the new minister there). They later attended Atlantic Union College (AUC) together where he graduated with a BA in Religion in 1960. Manfred married his "Schatz” (German for “treasure”) Lydia Willumson (a recent RN graduate) on December 18, 1960. They called each other “Schatz” for the next 63 years.
Shortly after their marriage, Manfred was drafted into the United States Army. After basic training in San Antonio, TX, they were stationed in Munich, Germany where they welcomed their first child, a baby girl. The army then moved them back to the United States, and a son & another daughter followed, granting him an honorable discharge from the US Army.
The young family settled in South Lancaster, MA where Manfred worked for Atlantic Union College for many years. He served as the physical plant manager in charge of the college grounds, maintenance and power house. Mr. Suckert later ran his own plumbing business & earned his Master Plumber license from Fitchburg State College. He held numerous licenses & certificates including: Master Plumber licenses in two states (MA and NH), Master Pipe Fitter (MA), Second Class Fireman (MA Department of Safety / Division of Inspection), Sewer Treatment Plant License, and a Teaching Certificate for Industrial Arts. He was a highly educated man who chose plumbing as his profession.
He was well known in his community for his skill as a plumber, and as someone who was helpful to those in need. Many times he would go out in the night or on weekends to thaw frozen pipes or attend to other plumbing emergencies. He found joy in helping others, and did so humbly. A hardworking man, “Fred” (as he was known by his many friends) also worked for a division of Lancaster Department of Public Works, while running his own business. He modeled and taught his children the value of hard work and a strong work ethic. Later he worked for the Atlantic Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Fred lived in the South Lancaster community for over 50 years before he & Lydia retired to North Carolina.
At various times throughout his life, Fred enjoyed a number of interests that included: traveling, beekeeping, gardening & coin collecting.
At the time of his passing, Fred was a member of the Hendersonville Seventh-day-Adventist church. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lydia Suckert along with his three children (and their spouses)- Sylvia Green (Larry), Harry Suckert (Kim) and Sonya Beisiegel (Dan). He had ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Additionally, he is survived by his three brothers: Lothar, Gunter, & Rolf Suckert along with a number of nieces/nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters-in-law and a granddaughter.
