Waynesville-Mattie Burr Jenkins Messer, age 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 while at her home under Hospice Care. A native of Haywood County, Mattie was the daughter of the late Boone and Viola Franklin Jenkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Troy Messer, who died in 2005, her brother, Jarvis Jenkins, sisters Pearl Cooper, and Lula Mae Hannah.
Mattie had a love for her family and friends and especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was a housewife, loved quilting, gardening and making homemade relish. She especially loved going to her church, Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist, where she was a member for over forty years.
Mattie is survived by 3 daughters, Mary Lanning (George), Mildred Golden (Larry), and Cora Price (Jeff) and her son David (Sissy). She is also survived by her brothers Davis Jenkins (Pat), Medford Jenkins (Linda), Robert Jenkins (Patsy) and sister, Ina Conard, of Waynesville, as well as RD Jenkins (Dale), and Frank Ray Jenkins of Richmond, Virginia.
Mattie’s grandchildren are Angela Mace (Shane), Andy Lanning (Brooke), Mark Golden (KaLee), Matthew Golden (Amber), Jonathan Messer (Carly), Jennifer Creasman (Danny), and Travis Messer. Her great-grandchildren are Landon and Samuel Mace, Maddie and Emersyn Lanning, Ensley, Hudson, Harper, Abel Golden, Stella and Sophia Messer, and Sawyer Creasman. In addition to all of these who loved her dearly, she leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, October 6, at Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist Church with Reverend Philip Wyatt, and the Reverend Dr. Mark Golden, Mattie’s grandson, officiating. Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-2pm prior to the service and at other times the family will be at the Messer Home.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan and Travis Messer, Matthew Golden, Andy Lanning, Landon and Samuel Mace, and Danny Creasman.
