of family, and open-hearted friend, passed away in hospice early in the morning of May 4th at the
age 74.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on 29 April 1946 to Lowey and Selma (Kaminsky) Greenman and
raised in Hollis Hills, Queens. As a child, she was surrounded by dozens of members of the Fay-
Mor Family Circle, an unusually tight-knit group of extended family supporting one another with
joy and love. She married Jack Catalan on December 8, 1984, and with him continued to raise
her four children of a former marriage in Airmont, NY. In her later years she delighted in following
her children’s adventures around the world.
Michelle possessed a thirst for knowledge and a deep compassion for children that fueled her
lifetime calling as an educator. She graduated from St. John’s University and began her teaching
career at the age of 21 in Washington Heights. She later earned her master’s degree in special
education and worked selflessly with the students of Suffern Junior High School where she
taught for over 20 years. Michelle was a true and devoted friend to all children in need and had a
gift for seeing their hearts clearly. She believed in the inherent worth of each child and in
supporting them in discovering their inner selves.
Michelle’s love of music pervaded her life and her angelic voice and vivacious presence were a
gift to all. As a young woman she sang professionally and later shared her talents privately with
her children, family, and friends. She continued to sing songs with her caregivers and family
through the last days of life.
Above all, Michelle will be remembered for her joy of life, her enthusiasm for everyday things, and
for her fierce devotion to those she loved. She met life as a wonderful mystery and exhilarating
adventure, was happy to see each sunrise, and took solace in the beauty of the night.
Michelle’s family includes the love of her life and husband of 36 years, Jack, her sister Phyllis, her
inlaws, her beloved children David, Brad, Andrew, and Luna (and their partners), and her eight
cherished grandchildren Sean, Sam, Avery, Bija, Kate, Iona, Ada,and Isla.
Michelle will be privately interred in the Fay-Mor family plot at Beth Moses Cemetery in Long
Island, NY. There will be no shiva, but a celebration of her life will be held at a future date to be
determined. Donations to her memory may be made to any organization that supports children’s
wellbeing or education such as UNICEF or St.Jude’s Research Hospital.
