

Waynesville-Sue Plemmons Smathers, 83 went to be with her Lord on Thursday, July 22, 2021. Sue was born in Haywood County on January 21, 1938, to the late B.S. and Nina Parker Plemmons. Her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the love of her life. Sue enjoyed working in her flowers, traveling, spending time at the beach, and staying at her lake house at Lake Glenville. She owned Spanish Villa Gift Shop, was the Financial Secretary at First Baptist Church of Waynesville, and was the Conference Coordinator at Lake Junaluska Assembly until her retirement. Sue was a decorator of Lambuth Inn at Christmas time and was known for her beautiful handmade bows and flower arrangements. Sue was a charter member of Altrusa and loved serving her Lord and Saviour through her church.
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Marilou Mason of Canton.
Sue is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Bruce Smathers; daughters, Kathy Eavenson (Scotty) and Karen Best (Marty); grandchildren, Jamie Henson (Mark), Heather Downs (Rufus), and Jeremy Best (Caitlin); great-grandchildren, Caroline and Harper Henson, Hadley, Cole, and Reed Downs, and Palmer and Jace Best; and several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 25, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Dr. J.D. Grant and the Reverend Jason Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Old Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
