Peace be with you in this time of mourning and celebrating the life of a man whose influence lives on.

I couldn't help but think of the lines from Bob's poem "Litany of Tools" from his book, PLUMBERS:
"Every family hands down the tools it needs to live by, worn as long-held convictions: What we love survives generations, stretched along this worn folding rule."  

I hope the tools your father passed to your family brings you all comfort now.

We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved father. He sounds like a noble, valiant soul who sought ways to make the world a better place than he found it. While we never met Mr. Stewart personally, We felt we knew him and his children through stories from his son, Bob. They are a wonderful family and any veteran that served his country in WW2 certainly deserves to be thanked and remembered.  God bless the Stewart family.

We are both sorry for your loss.  It is never easy to lose a parent.

 My father was business agent for Plumbers Local Union 35 in St. Louis for many years, and then became an officer for the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, overseeing and organizing several states.  He put a lot of people to work and helped open the trades to more minorities.  Before that, he "worked with the tools," as they say, mostly for Sheehan Plumbing Co.  He always worked.  On the morning of June 6, 1944, he took part in the invasion of Normandy, France, aboard LST 281 (a landing ship), arriving at Utah Beach, as one other member of the crew has written, "with automatic shootings of weapons all around us."  These things are not to be forgotten.  He provided for the educations of many children and grandchildren, me included.  When I had no direction after high school, he made sure I registered in a local college.  He actually registered for me and set me off.  It changed my life.
