Devon Phillip Rister, 33, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, August 26th 2020.

Devon, affectionally called “Big D”, was born on April 27th 1987. He was a life long resident of Welsh and a member of the Roanoke United Methodist Church.

He was a 2005 graduate of Welsh High School where he took pride in playing football with his Greyhound teammates. He enjoyed working with his hands, “tinkering” with electronics and hanging out with friends. One of his most favorite things to do was to “wet a line” at the Tietje’s pond, where he and his brother Michael spent many enjoyable hours fishing.

Devon was a gentle giant in more than just his height. He had a kind heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Bill and Sherry Rister of Welsh; a sister, Amanda (Garrett) Klein; Nieces, Alaina, Trinity and Madison; Nephews, Ethan and Aiden; half siblings Dawn (Steve) Horn and Shannon (Lori) Rister and their family. Uncles Jim Rister, Alan (Vicky) Rister, Scotty (Vickie) Olds; cousins Brad, Bryan, Amy, Sara, Erica, Addie, Lindsey, Ashley and Derick.

He was welcomed into Heaven by his brother Michael Franklin Rister; Grandparents Billy/Micky Rister, Kathleen Olds, Bill/Darlean Olds and an aunt Donna Hauhe.

Visitation will be at Roanoke United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 5th from 4-8 pm. Visitation will resume on Sunday September 6th at 12pm. Funeral services will be at 2pm with Reverend Walter Parker Jr. officiating. Interment is in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home.

Carrying Devon to his final resting place will be pallbearers; Garrett Klein, Ethan Klein, Jude Stebbins, Donovan Abshire, David Matte, William Tietje, Tommy Lafosse and Shawn Johnson. Honorary pallbearer, Aiden Klein.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Roanoke United Methodist Church in memory of Devon.

From the first moment we met Devon it was obvious he was a special person. The entire family took an instant liking to him. Over time not only did he become Jaimee’s best friend, we all looked at him as our gentle giant!❤️ He was her protector, confidant, her safe place, the person she could always count on. I can’t tell you how much that means to me and her father.
He had such an easy way about him that just put you at peace.
Jaimee knows without a doubt he was her guardian angel and will continue be.
Our hearts just break for your family. I pray you find peace and I know you feel pride for the sincere and beautiful young man you raised.
We love you Devon and you are forever in our hearts!❤️❤️

My very first memory of Devon was when I was a little girl...I would torment him, my uncle Chris, and trey all the time. He would pick me up and put me on top the book shelf and I’d just laugh with him. I hadn’t seen him for years until he had rejoined pool league earlier this year and we would laughed at the past together, and the shock in his eyes when we saw I wasn’t a little kid anymore. He was truly an amazing man, and will forever be missed. My heart goes out to you and your family and y’all will forever be in my prayers. I’m so sorry for your loss...God really gained a true angel with him❤️
