April 5, 1951 – October 21, 2026
Alvaro Lopez Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, and friend, went to be with our Lord on October 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Weslaco, Texas. Born on April 5, 1951, in Mercedes, Texas, to Severo and Estela Lopez, he lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family.
From a young age, Alvaro understood that caring for others meant being willing to sacrifice. Immediately after his high school graduation, he removed his cap and gown in the parking lot and set out with his family, migrating north and driving through the night to Wyoming for work. That journey reflected a commitment he carried throughout his life: to provide for those he loved and give them opportunities to build lives of their own.
A proud graduate of Texas A&M University, Class of 1976, Alvaro took immense pride in his Hispanic heritage and in representing the Rio Grande Valley as an Aggie. At a time when opportunities to attend college were beyond the reach of many Hispanic families, his achievement held meaning beyond his own education. He helped broaden the university’s diversity and blazed a trail for generations of Hispanic Aggies to follow. Although financial constraints prevented him from attending commencement, they could never diminish his pride in what he had accomplished. He went on to earn a master’s degree from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, continuing a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
For more than 30 years, Alvaro served Weslaco Independent School District as an educator and science coordinator. With a special passion for science and geology, he approached the world with curiosity and found purpose in helping others understand it. His love of learning reached beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impression on the students and colleagues whose lives he touched.
Of all the roles he held, none meant more to him than husband, father, and grandfather. For 46 years, he shared his life with his beloved wife, Celia V. Lopez. Together, they raised three children—Claudia Lopez Jean, Iliana Lopez, and Alvaro Lopez Jr.—and built a family grounded in love, commitment, and perseverance. His grandsons, Mason Jean and Braxton Jean, brought him immeasurable joy and gave him even more reason to take pride in the life he had built. His beloved dogs, Keeley and Dory, were cherished companions who held their own special place in his heart.
Alongside his devotion to family and education, Alvaro had a playful spirit and interests that made him unmistakably himself. A die-hard Aggie, his loyalty to the maroon and white never wavered. He was also a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan, earning the affectionate nickname “Swiftie” from friends in later years. He loved music and enjoyed all genres. His enjoyment of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” will remain one of the many memories that bring a smile to those who knew him.
He loved cooking and the simple pleasure of bringing people together over a meal. He also knew the value of a dollar and enjoyed the pursuit of a good bargain. A master price matcher, he could often be found shopping at H-E-B with Mireles’s prices memorized. His determination to get the best deal became a familiar—and fondly remembered—part of family life.
Alvaro also treasured the friendships that filled his days with conversation and laughter. His “brew crew” at Jose’s Cafecito and “todos de la cuatro y del rancho” held a special place in his life, sharing the everyday moments that become our most enduring memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Severo and Estela Lopez, and his sister, Lina Lopez. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, children, and grandsons; his siblings, Mario Lopez (Janie), Carlos Lopez (Lydia), Freddy Lopez (Rosie), and Pablo Lopez (Rosie†); and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Alvaro’s legacy lives on in the family he nurtured, the students he inspired, and the friendships he cherished. In the way he worked, taught, and cared for others, he showed that love is expressed through the things we do each day. His hands may now rest, but the fruits of his labor will continue to flourish through those whose lives he touched.
May he rest in eternal peace in the presence of our Lord, remembered always with pride, gratitude, and love.
Thanks & Gig ’Em.
